Christmas Ball Wall Hanging with Bowdabra Bow

We normally think of Christmas balls being hung on the Christmas tree or added to greenery on a mantel, but here is a cute idea to have a Christmas “ball” wall hanging that would be cute in any room of your home. This would make a wonderful project to do with your child. Let them have fun painting the ornament, applying the glitter, and making the bow. An adult will need to assemble the project since hot glue is required.

A note about the supplies in this project:
Michael’s has the unpainted Christmas ball shaped plaque with their Christmas craft items. If you can’t find one, a regular unpainted plaque of any shape can be substituted. Any craft store sells these year round.

You’ll need:
Unpainted wood ball ornament shape plaque (see note above about where to get one)
Glittered Merry Christmas Ornament
Green and metallic gold craft paints
Craft paint brushes
Elmer’s Glue All
Green glitter
1 1/2 inch wide metallic gold ribbon
Bowdabra Bow Wire
Hot Glue Gun and glue sticks

1. Paint Christmas ball plaque and make the “ball” green and the “topper” metallic gold. When the paint is dry, brush on a liberal amount of glue on the green part of the ball plaque. Apply green glitter over the glue and let it dry completely.

2. Remove the hanger from the Merry Christmas ornament, then hot glue ornament to the center of the plaque.

3. Cut a piece of ribbon about 11 inches long. Fold it in half, and glue ends together to form a loop. Glue the loop on the back of the plaque.

4. Make a 7 inch wide fold and twist bow with tails. To begin, cut a piece of Bowdabra Wire 20 inches long. Fold it in half and place it in the Bowdabra.

5. Cut a long piece of ribbon. Fold it in half to find the center, then place center into the Bowdabra.

6. Using the remaining ribbon on the spool, insert the end of the ribbon in the Bowdabra. Make a loop about 3 1/2 inches long. Give the end of the ribbon a twist before placing into the Bowdabra. At this point, the loop should have the right side of the ribbon facing and the ribbon on the other side should have the wrong side of the ribbon facing.

7. Make another loop on the other side and twist the end before placing it on the Bowdabra. Both loops should have the right side of the ribbon facing. The ribbon on the roll should have the wrong side facing.

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until there are a total of 6 loops.

9. Scrunch bow center with the Bowdabra wand.

10. Leave the bow in the Bowdabra for now. Thread the 2 loose ends of the Bowdabra Bow Wire through the loop at the other end. Pull the wire tightly so the bow will not fall apart, then remove from the Bowdabra. Separate the two loose ends of the wire and bring them around to the back of the bow. Double knot, but do not cut wire ends.

11. Using the excess wire on the back of the bow, tie bow on the top of the ribbon loop attached to the plaque. Twist and reshape bow as needed, then trim bow ends to desired length. Ends may be cut straight, on a diagonal, or dovetailed.

Your sign is now ready to be hung on a small nail or hook. Merry Christmas!
