How to make fun Mardi Gras drop earrings

It’s Mardi Gras time! If you want to make things more fun then you need these Mardi Gras drop earrings.  Now, let me explain the inspiration.

A few weeks ago I was surfing through television channels, and I came across the old movie “Overboard.” In this movie, Joanna, played by Goldie Hawn was having a dream of a New Year’s Party.  I immediately noticed her bow drop earrings.  And hey, a party is a party and Mardi Gras is definitely a party. So, I quickly (And with Bowdabra it’s always quick) whipped up a cute pair of Mardi Gras drop earrings.

This is the clip of the dream:

And with the following DIY tutorial, you can make your own and party hearty!

Mardi Gras drop earrings

Materials:

Mini Bowdabra with hair bow tool and ruler attachment

Bowdabra bow wire

5/8”  purple grosgrain ribbon

Headpin with loop

Green bead (2)

Yellow bead (2)

Drop charm (2) I used a 1 ½” silver bar

Jump rings

Needle-nosed pliers

Earring backs with a loop to add drop charm (pierced or not)

Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

Instructions:

  1. First, gather all the materials. Using a jump ring and needle nosed pliers open the loop end of the head pin.  It’s important to open the jump ring by twisting instead of pulling apart.  Attach the drop charm to that loop and close in the jump ring in the same manner as the opening.

  1. Next, thread on the green bead and the yellow bead.

  1. Now, attach the earring by bending the straight end of the head pin to the left. Then, curl around the needle-nosed pliers making a loop.  Use another jump ring to attach the earring back. (Open and close the jump ring as described in step 1.  Set aside and repeat these steps for the second earring.

Make the bow

To make the bow, cut a piece of Bowdabra bow wire 18”. Fold in half and insert into the Mini Bowdabra.  You will have a loop on one side and two loose wires on the other that will be your slipknot.

Cut a piece of purple grosgrain ribbon 8 ½” long. Fold in half to find the center and insert into the Mini Bowdabra.

Next, make a loop to the 1” mark on the hair bow tool and ruler. Make a matching loop on the other side. Use the Bowdabra wand to scrunch down.  Then, thread the two loose wires through the loop and pull tight while the bow is still in the Bowdabra.  Remove and turn to the back making a double knot.

To finish, use the hot glue gun to attach the bow to the top of the earring back. Make a second bow and do the same to the second earring.
