How to make a cute St. Patrick’s Day hair barrette and bow

hair barrette and bow

Hi, I’m Bowdabra designer, Barbara and I would like to show you how to make a hair barrette and bow this month. and I thought what better barrette to make than ones which celebrated St. Patrick’s Day! I don’t have any little granddaughters to make bows for these days so I made them for my sister’s granddaughters instead!

Supplies Needed for this Project:

Bowdabra mini
Bowdabra regular
Scissors (for cutting the ribbon)
Bowdabra wire
Assorted Ribbons
Hot Glue Gun
Embellishments

St. Patrick’s Day hair barrette and bow

Of course, the first thing that you want to do with your Bowdabra is to cut your wire, fold it in half and place into the Bowdabra. Tuck the ends under the Bowdabra at each end to stay out of the way while working.

Then, take your first ribbon, which in this case is a wire edged shamrock ribbon which is 2 1/2 ” wide by 30″ long. Tuck the end of the ribbon in your Bowdabra and then cross over your Bowdabra and twist your ribbon. Next, cross over and twist your ribbon again. Finally, cross over and make the last loop. You should now have two loops on either side of your Bowdabra.

Now, take the Green Tinsel Ribbon that you see in the Upper Left of this picture and cut two pieces of it that are 1 1/2″ Wide by 5 1/2″ Long and insert them into your Bowdabra. Use your wand to push  your ribbon down.

Next, take your Wire Edged Green Glitter Ribbon. Cut two pieces that are 1 1/2″ Wide by 4 1/2″ Long. Insert both pieces into the Bowdabra and use your wand to push all the ribbon down. It is a good idea to use the wand to push your ribbon down periodically.

Go ahead and pull your wire up at this point and insert the end into the end with the loop and pull it tight. (Slipknot)

Remove the bow and then, go around to the back and tie another knot. Then, after keeping it pulled tight tie a double knot.  Use the wire to tie it to the clip.

Use your hot glue gun to attach the Shamrock embellishment to the front.

Second hair barrette

Begin your next hair clip the same way as the hair bow by cutting a piece of the Bowdabra Wire, folding it in half and placing it in your Bowdabra Mini and tucking the ends underneath to keep them out of the way.

Next, use a piece of Tulle with glitter, 3″ Wide by 18″ Long. Then, just scrunch the Tulle into the Bowdabra Mini and then use your wand to scrunch it down.

Use some Organza ribbon (green) which is 5/8″ Wide by 12″Long and lay the end in the Bowdabra Mini and make a loop. Twist the ribbon and cross over the Bowdabra, make another loop, twist the ribbon. Cross over the Bowdabra Mini, then, twist and cross over the Bowdabra Mini and make the final and fourth loop.

Cut four pieces of Glitter Ribbon 3/8″ Wide by 2″ Long and place them in the Bowdabra Mini. Don’t forget to scrunch that ribbon down with the wand!

Pull your wire through the loop and tighten. Go to the back with the wire and tie a double knot into your wire.

Fluff all of your Tulle and ribbon out and hot glue a barrette to the back and the Shamrock embellishment to the front. Didn’t these turn out so cute? The little girls loved them.  They all plan on wearing the hair bows to school.
