How to make a fun patriotic pom pom hair tie

This Memorial Day, take a moment and pause to remember those who gave all.  All it takes to make this little patriotic pom pom hair tie is just a minute or two and some yarn.  I bet you didn’t know that the Bowdabra is a great pom pom maker!

This patriotic pom pom hair tie looks great tied to a flip flop as well.  It is so simple that it makes a great kid’s craft.  And July 4thwill soon be here so let’s get started!

Materials:

  • Yarn in red, white, and blue
  • Bowdabra mini Bowmaker
  • Navy hair tie
  • Scissors

Instructions:

First, gather all your supplies.  Next, cut a length of one of the colors of yarn, fold it in half and insert into the Bowdabra.  This time you will insert the yarn in the Bowdabra on the other side.  (See photo) Fold under to keep out of the way while you make your pom pom.

Insert the red yarn leaving about 1 ½” tail.  Begin wrapping the yarn around the towers.  Continue wrapping the yarn until you have gone around 25 times.

Next, insert the white yarn and leave a tail as you did before.  Then, wrap this yarn around 25 times as well.

Repeat the previous step with the blue yarn.

Now, insert the loose ends of the slipknot yarn through the loop and pull tight while the pom pom is still in the Bowdabra. Tie a knot and double knot it. Remove from the Bowdabra.

Use the scissors to cut the loops on both sides.  Then, trim your pom pom to a pleasing shape.

To finish tie the completed patriotic pom pom to a hair tie or make two and tie them to flip flops, hat, or whatever.
