How to Make a Bath Organizer from a Thrift Shop Basket

Thrifting is a real thing—and it’s becoming ever more popular.  Thrifting is shopping at thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, and the like searching out used items that can be transformed and reused. You can put your own spin on your recently discovered treasure. Here’s how I turned a simple wire basket into a useful bath organizer.Thrift shop basket Organizer

Supplies for the Thrift Shop Basket Turned Bath Organizer

Here’s what I used:

  • thrift shop wire basket
  • scrap of wood (or MDF) for the shelf
  • spray paint
  • Two small brads to support the shelf
  • Two small cup hooks to support the shelf

Instructions for Making the Bath Organizer

  1. First, measure the interior dimensions of the basket to determine how big to make the shelf. Cut the shelf to size.
  2. Spray paint the basket and shelf to match your decor.
  3. Drill two pilot holes on each side edge.
  4. Insert small brads or cup hooks to support the shelf. I used brads on one side, and cup hooks on the other. Slide the shelf into place in the basket.
  5. Weave a length of ribbon around the basket. The width of your ribbon will depend on the grid of the basket. Overlap the ends and secure with hot glue.
  6. Gather supplies to make an accent bow for the organizer—Mini Bowdabra Bow Making & Design Tool, 18″ length Bowdabra bow wire, and 60″ length of ribbon.
  7. Next, fold bow wire in half and put it in the Mini Bowdabra. Tuck the ends of the wire under the Mini Bowdabra to keep them out of the way.
  8. Make a bow and compress the ribbon with the Mini Bowdabra wand.
  9. With the ribbons still in the Mini Bowdabra, pass the wire ends through the loop and tighten. Tie a knot on the reverse side. Leave the wire ends long to attach the bow to the basket organizer. Make any adjustment to the bow.
  10. Attach the bow to the basket organizer covering the overlapped ribbon.
  11. Add your selection of toiletry items to the bath organizer. I up-scaled this medicine bottle by gluing a strip of holographic glitter canvas ribbon from LaRibbons around it.
  12. The thrift shop basket handle becomes the towel rack. Have fun creating your thrifted home decor project.
