How to Use Sponge Painting to Make the Perfect Patriotic Banner

Kids of all ages will be successful making this patriotic banner with sponge painting. It’s easy to add segments to spell any greeting.Patriotic Sponge Paint Banner

Gather these supplies:

  • Center cut out saved from the patriotic paper plate wreath or a paper plate for a palette
  • Old sponge
  • Red, silver, and blue acrylic paints
  • String
  • Cardstock or glossy paper cut into 4″ x 6″ pieces
  • Black permanent marker

Let’s make the Patriotic Banner:

  1. Add a small dollop of paint to the palette.
  2. Cut an old sponge into pieces that have about a ¾” square end. Dampen the sponges.
  3. Dip a sponge into the paint and tap off excess. It’s always easier to add more, but nearly impossible to take away too  much.
  4. Make random stamps with the sponge.
  5. Add letters to the patriotic banner segments. You can freehand draw the letters, or print them with a printer. You can print either before you sponge paint, or after the sponge painting is completely dry.
  6. Pierce small holes at the top corners of each banner segment, and tie them together with string, twine, or ribbon. Add string to the first and the last segments for hanging the banner.
  7. Display your patriotic banner with pride.
